And so it is February. 2017 is going so quick already, and I can't believe that it has been two weeks since I left Australia to return to the UK. I am so grateful that I have the means to visit Australia every year, and see and connect with my beautiful family (and most especially my dad). Having started my 2017 Character Challenge in Australia, and then finishing it in the UK, it was .... definitely a challenge in itself. I want to be honest and feel that that first month, whilst filled with thoughts, words, and actions of kindness, it felt a little disjointed, a little interrupted. In keeping with the theme of that month, however, I tried to treat my self and my own expectations regarding this challenge with kindness, and openness, and non-judgement .... which kind of leads me into February, and my compassion month, with, well, compassion!
So what to expect this month?
Firstly, I am going to really examine the difference between compassion, kindness, and empathy. I think that people can get really confused between these three terms (myself included), and it will be handy to get clear early on what is a kind act, what is a compassionate act, and what is empathy.
Then I will actively pursue thinking, speaking, and acting in a compassionate way, and record this, letting you have insight into what I learn along the way, to discover if compassion is more about the big actions, or the small thoughts and words, etc.
I want to explore the Buddhist meaning of compassion, but also compassion from other perspectives, whether that be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and an Athiest view.
There also has to be an illustration of compassion in the community, and the wider world, and how through these examples we can develop our own compassion on a personal and interpersonal level.
I also want to ask you, is there anything in particular that you would like me to explore around the theme of compassion? If so let me know in the comments.
