A little over a week ago I attended a PSA (Professional Speaking Association) meeting and watched a very interesting talk from Jo Simpson. Jo's talk was reflective of her journey, what she had learnt, and how she applies what she has learnt to her own life. It was an inspiring story, and much of what she had to say resonated with my own life philosophy. So, what resonated and why?
Firstly, Jo talked about a life stance that I have noticed to be true in my own life, especially in the past decade. What is this stance? It is that the "universe provides," or "things flow when you head in the right direction." Have you ever felt like everything in life is just clicking for you? Especially when you have followed your heart, pursued your passion, embraced you mojo? For me, I have noticed that when I am on the right path, doors open and opportunities present themselves more readily. I know, I know, perhaps I am creating these opportunities myself because I am openly looking, or awake to what is out there - but that doesn't take away that magic of the universe providing for you; providing for you what is true and right in that moment.
Secondly, Jo talked about embracing your "core values" and living your personal and professional life in line with these values. When discovering your core values you have to really think about what is important for you. If you live your life by what is important to you, you can live an ethical life, a life of no regrets, and a life of no doubts. So, what are my core values?
I imagine that a few of my core values will be similar to yours. I also imagine that my core values may change or shift over time (nothing can ever stay the same; change is inevitable). I try to live my whole life by these values, I remind myself that I want to be a person that embraces all of the above. So what are your core values? and what do they say about the person that you want to be?
I find as a speaker that I must keep abreast of new thoughts, ideas, and concepts, I must see what others are doing, talking about, or creating; I must to all this if I want to be the best speaker that I can be. Jo Simpson has given me a lot to consider - especially as so many of my ideas about life aline with her own. Knowledge and collaboration is power; sharing and connecting is power; with this kind of power we can create a life that is true to ourselves.
