I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to be a winning X-Factor contestant.
My hair is piled high into a bouffant, my lips smeared with a deep red lipstick, lips which had not seen food all day because of nerves (or is it the unconscious desire to loose a few more pounds), my dress so constricting I can barely breath, and platform shoes so high, to offset my short-ish stature. I've only been singing for a few years, in my bedroom, holding onto my hairbrush with a death grip, my bouncing bed a fantastical stage; and here I am, glittery tape showering down on my head as the four judges surround me. A few days later my debut album is released and I just know it's going to be the biggest hit ever! I mean, everyone at home voted for me right? Of course they want to buy my debut album, right? My first song makes it to number one - I jump around my mum's lounge room in delight. Suddenly it's Christmas, then New Years, then it's february ... my latest song has barely made the top fifty. I haven't heard from my mentor for a few weeks, and worry starts to gnaw at my stomach like a big, dirty, rat trying to escape. A year later no-one can remember my name ... what happened to my fame? to my fortune? I thought this was meant to be easy ...
Success is not instantaneous! It will not magically appear just because you wish it! Success is a process that envelopes your day to day life, so that each step you take takes you from a simple dream to a solid reality.
Truly satisfying success takes time because it means that the success was wrought of purpose, focus, passion, and belief. It was wrought with hard work and dedication, respect and care.
Success is built day by day - not in an instant.
1. Do what you are passionate about.
When you are passionate about what you are doing - whether in school, in your professional life, or in your personal life - to work on it day by day, it ceases to be a chore and you are more likely to persist with your dreams every day.
2. Start right NOW!
That's right, start on your dreams right now! If you wait for the "perfect" time, space, or place, then in all likelihood you will never get started. It doesn't matter if what you do isn't exactly right or perfect yet, this is how you learn and grow to be the best that you can be.
3. Get your Success Tribe together.
Gather together all of your trusted family, friends, and mentors into your own little tribe of success (or have multiple tribes - that's cool too). Create a mastermind group, have an informal support group, talk to people constantly ... Success breeds with successful people.
4. Get up every time you fall down.
Persistence .... or resilience .... or both, is important. If you give up at the first hurdle, or haven't hit instant fame, it is so easy to just throw your hands in the air and give up. BUT, if you are persistent, pick yourself up and brush yourself off when you stack it, and keep on trying, each day becomes a step closer to success.
5. Take time to grow every day.
Success is not easy, but it is a huge opportunity to grow everyday, not just your business, but as a person. Challenge yourself, take pride in what you achieve, and remember to believe that with each growing step you are ever closer to your goal.
Are you like that X-Factor star, who wants instant fame with non of the hard work? But fails to make it stick because you don't have the back up of history and growth behind you?
Are you a step-by-stepper? A working hard each day kinda person? Someone who knows that it's a hard slog to success, but is willing to put in the hours to get there?
(I know which one I am)
